AGAT Laboratories is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Hamel, Ph.D. to the position of Vice President, Operations – Ontario & Atlantic.
In this role, Robert will provide strategic and operational leadership across AGAT’s Ontario and Atlantic regions, with responsibility for multi-site performance, client service excellence, and continuous improvement in support of AGAT’s national growth strategy. He brings a proven track record in managing complex laboratory operations, driving operational efficiency, and building high-performing teams in both environmental and life sciences testing.
This announcement marks a welcome home return for Robert after previously serving as General Manager, Ontario Environmental Division, where his leadership helped elevate AGAT’s Ontario operations as a best-in-class service provider.
Since his earlier tenure with AGAT, Robert has held senior roles with several major laboratory organizations, including ALS Environmental, Dynacare, Labstat International, and most recently as Director, Ultra Trace Operations, Ontario at Bureau Veritas. Across these positions, he has led multi-disciplinary teams, overseen ultra-trace analytical laboratories, forensic and clinical toxicology services, and in vitro toxicology and microbiology testing. He has been responsible for full P&L management, regulatory and accreditation compliance (including ISO 17025, ISO 15189, Health Canada, FDA, and other bodies), and the development of new methods and capabilities in areas such as PFAS and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
Robert is known for his people-focused leadership style, with a strong emphasis on employee engagement, coaching, and building an environment of teamwork and trust. He has extensive experience implementing performance metrics, daily huddles, and operational dashboards to improve productivity, throughput, and turnaround time, while maintaining the highest standards of data quality and safety. His background also includes contributions to industry committees and advisory groups, further reinforcing his depth of technical and regulatory expertise.
Robert holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Biochemistry) from the University of Waterloo, as well as M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Biochemistry from Laurentian University. His combination of scientific expertise, operational discipline, and familiarity with both AGAT’s culture and the Ontario/Atlantic markets uniquely positions him to support AGAT’s continued expansion and commitment to Service Beyond Analysis.
