Radon Test Kits from AGAT Laboratories

Short Term vs. Long Term Radon Tests

Short term is the quickest way to test for radon. In this test, the deviceradon infographic from the government of canada that describes the dangers of radon buildup inside homes and how it happens. remains in a location for a period of 2 to 10 days. Because radon levels tend to vary from day to day and from season to season, a short-term test might be less likely than a long-term test to give the year-round average radon level. Results of this are not acceptable to determine or to assess the need for remedial actions.

Long Term test remains in place for a minimum of 91 days. A long term test (conducted during the heating season) will generally give you a reading that is more likely to tell you the year-round average radon level than a short-term test. Health Canada recommends long term radon testing to determine if radon concentration exceeds the Health Canada Guideline level of 200 Bq/m3. The results for long term testing will determine what remedial action to take.

Radon in Water

Radon can be detected in both indoor air and drinking water.  Radon can gas dissolve into groundwater which may result in higher levels observed in the home.

Homeowners relying on drinking water from underground storage such as private wells or aquifers have a higher potential for radon in their drinking water.  Surface waters that supply communities have been found to have lower radon levels as radon is released into the air prior to entering the home.  When water containing radon is used in household activities such as showering, dishwashing or laundry, radon can be released into the air indoors. This can contribute to elevated radon levels within the home.

Analysis of radon in water can assist in identifying potential sources of radon entry into the home.  Contact us at [email protected] for any questions.
